It was a racing chronograph, one of a trilogy of Omega tool watches launched that year, and its founding innovation was typographic: it moved the tachymeter scale off the dial and onto the bezel, an industry first so successful that within a decade it was simply how chronographs looked. Broad arrow hands, caliber 321, three years of production, and the all-time Speedmaster auction record decades later. The line begins here, at a racetrack, pointed at nothing higher than a lap time.

1959: the customer takes it to orbit

The CK2998 refined the formula: alpha hands, the first black bezel, same caliber 321. Its place in history was arranged not by Omega but by a customer. In October 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra flew the Mercury Sigma 7 mission wearing a CK2998 he had bought himself, the way a pilot buys a good instrument. The first Omega in space was a consumer choice, three years before any qualification program existed. 1962: the numbering changes

The ST 105.002 is the quiet reference, remembered mostly for what it carries: the arrival of Omega's MAPICS reference numbering and the baton hands that would define the dial from then on. Every family has a reference like this, the one that exists so the next one can matter.

1963: the watch that passed everything

In late 1964, NASA procured chronographs from multiple brands and set about destroying them: heat, cold, vacuum, humidity, vibration, acceleration, shock. The ST 105.003 was the only watch that passed every test, and in 1965 it was qualified for all manned space missions. That June, Ed White wore his on America's first spacewalk, and collectors have called the reference the Ed White ever since.

Here is the detail that makes the 105.003 the hinge of the whole line: it also closed the story it opened. In December 1972, Eugene Cernan climbed back into the lunar module at the end of Apollo 17 wearing a 105.003. The last watch worn on the moon was the same reference that won the right to go in the first place. One reference, both bookends. 1964: the moonwatch itself

The ST 105.012 built the body the Speedmaster still wears: the asymmetric case shielding the crown and pushers, the twisted lyre lugs, and the word Professional on the dial for the first time. Research at the Omega Museum settled a long collector argument about Apollo 11: both wrists wore the 105.012.

And then the detail that no marketing department would dare invent. The Eagle's onboard timer failed, so Neil Armstrong left his 105.012 aboard as the backup clock and stepped onto the surface with nothing on his wrist. Buzz Aldrin wore his out the hatch. The first watch worn on the moon belonged to the second man on it, because the first man's watch had been promoted to spacecraft equipment. The moonwatch earned its name by being useful, which is the most Speedmaster way possible.

1967: the last of the old heart

The ST 145.012 is the reference collectors whisper about: the last standard-production caliber 321 Speedmaster, the final column-wheel movement before economics arrived. Michael Collins wore one aboard Apollo 11, orbiting alone above his crewmates. When the 321 returned to production decades later as a prestige caliber, it was this reference's heart Omega was resurrecting, which tells you how the market eventually voted.

1968: the heart swap

At the precise moment of the program's greatest triumph, Omega replaced the Speedmaster's movement. The ST 145.022 carried the new caliber 861: cam-actuated instead of column-wheel, cheaper to build, easier to service, the quartz crisis arriving in the mechanism a few years before it arrived in the industry. The sources split the introduction between 1968 and 1969, and the file marks it circa accordingly. The 145.022 then ran roughly twenty years, the longest tenure in the line.

Its most famous variant closed the Apollo year: the gold BA 145.022, 1,014 pieces with a burgundy bezel, presented to astronauts at a Houston gala on November 25, 1969, with numbers reserved for the Apollo 1 crew. The watch that had just been to the moon, recast in gold to thank the people who took it there.

1989 to 2021: the long custody

The final three references are the custodians. The 3590.50 carried the 861 into the PIC-numbering era, the quiet bridge every long line needs. The 3570.50 carried the rhodium-plated caliber 1861 for eighteen years and became the moonwatch an entire generation actually bought. And the 311.30.42.30.01.005 closed the 1861 era in 2021, the last reference of the chain this file records. Its successor generation remains in production, and this site does not write pages for watches whose stories are still being edited. The file ends where the ink is dry.
