The file

The 5513 is the Submariner most of the world actually wore. Introduced in 1962 as the non-chronometer companion to the 5512, same case, cheaper caliber, it stayed in the catalog for twenty-seven years, the longest run of any Submariner reference. Divers, soldiers and desk workers bought it by the tens of thousands, and a small number went to militaries as the fabled MilSub variants.

That quarter-century run created the deepest variant map in the Rolex catalog: gilt gloss dials, matte dials, meters-first and feet-first depth text, maxi dials, and transition details that collectors chart to the year. It is a rabbit hole with a price ladder attached, because two 5513s of different eras can differ in value by multiples while sharing a reference number.

FROM THE FILE

The workhorse file. The 5513's abundance makes it the sane entry into vintage Rolex, and its variant map makes it the reference where era-correctness is the entire game: a service dial or swapped insert does not make a fake, but it makes a different, cheaper watch. Learn which decade you are buying before you learn which watch.

The lineage

Before you bid: the checklist

  • Date the watch, then the parts. Serial range, dial era and insert style must tell one consistent story. Mixed eras mean a serviced or assembled watch.
  • Service dials are honest only when disclosed. Rolex replaced dials routinely during service for decades. The replacement is common; the silence about it is the fraud.
  • MilSub claims need military proof. Genuine military 5513s have documented issue markings and provenance. The premium invites invention.
