Watch companies release watches every year. In 1957, Omega released a worldview: three tool watches at once, marketed as a professional line, each built for a different kind of working wrist. The Speedmaster CK2915 for racing drivers and timing crews. The Seamaster 300 CK2913 for divers. The Railmaster CK2914 for railway engineers, electricians, and scientists, the people whose workplaces were full of the era's new enemy, magnetic fields. Three references, launched together, speaking one design language: black high-contrast dials, luminous broad arrow hands, and the plain confidence of instruments. Collectors now call them the trilogy, and sometimes the holy trinity, and the 1957 class portrait hangs behind nearly every tool watch Omega has made since.
The racer
The Speedmaster's founding innovation was an act of relocation: it took the tachymeter scale off the dial and printed it on the bezel, the first chronograph to do so, and every racing chronograph since, from the Daytona to the Carrera, inherited the idea. Its fate needs little retelling here because it has its own dossier: the CK2915 begat the CK2998, the 105.003 that Ed White wore on America's first spacewalk, and the 105.012 that landed on the Moon in July 1969. The racing watch became the space watch, the tests and the missions made it immortal, and Dossier 01 walks that whole unbroken line. Verdict on the first sibling: survived, transcended.
The diver
The Seamaster 300 is the trilogy's second success story, and its family now lives in this file reference by reference: the CK2913 with its eight sub-variants, its pressure-sealed Naiad crown, its fragile bakelite bezel, and the honest oddity of a dial that says 300 on a watch guaranteed to 200, which Omega blamed on its testing equipment. The design matured through the CK14755 and the transitional 165.014 into the definitive thick-bezel 165.024, and then the second sibling did something the first never quite did: it enlisted. From 1967 to 1971 the British military issued the Royal Navy 165.024 with fixed bars, a circled-T tritium dial, and service engravings, and those issued watches are now the most valuable Seamasters of the vintage era. Verdict on the second sibling: survived, and went to war.
The shield
The third sibling solved the most legitimate problem of the three. The postwar world was filling with electric motors, generators, radar sets, and rail electrification, and magnetism quietly ruined mechanical watches: a magnetized hairspring makes a watch race or stop, and the people most exposed, engineers, technicians, scientists, were exactly the people who most needed accurate time. The Railmaster's answer was a soft-iron inner case, a Faraday cage around the movement built from MuMetal plate, that shielded the caliber to 1,000 gauss at a time when an ordinary watch managed about 60. It entered a genuine arms race: Rolex's Milgauss and IWC's Ingenieur were already on the market, and Omega arrived with its own pedigree, having built anti-magnetic watches for the RAF years earlier. Inside beat the calibers 284, 285, and 286, and outside it wore the trilogy's face, broad arrows and a black dial on a symmetrical case with no rotating bezel at all, the plainest and purest expression of the 1957 language.
It did not work. Not the watch, the market: the Railmaster's audience was too narrow, its face too close to the Seamaster's on the same shelf, and its magic invisible, protection is a feature you cannot see. Omega pulled it in 1963, six years in, just as the company's renumbering briefly restyled it the 135.004, and the trilogy became a duo. The hands tell the short life like tree rings: broad arrows on the earliest examples, dauphine in the middle, batons at the end, six sub-variants and out. Verdict on the third sibling: died young.
Failure, priced fifty years later
And then the market did what markets do to short runs of good watches. The Railmaster was produced for six years against the Speedmaster's seven decades, which means survivors are scarce, and scarcity plus trilogy membership turned the flop into the connoisseur's pick: honest CK2914s now trade in five figures, strong examples well into the teens, values per watch that rival and sometimes beat the siblings that outsold it a hundredfold. The pattern repeats across this site, the shortest runs make the biggest prices, but the Railmaster is its cleanest case: the watch that failed because nobody would pay for invisible protection is now paid for precisely because so few ever did.
The problem it solved got its vindication too. Magnetism never went away, phone speakers and laptop lids and induction cooktops made it universal, and when Omega finally beat it for good, with movements resistant to 15,000 gauss, the company revived the Railmaster name to carry the achievement, and in 2017 reissued all three 1957 watches together as an anniversary trilogy. The design language never needed reviving. It never left.

Three watches, one language, three fates: transcendence, service, and early death followed by resurrection as the rarest of the family. The file's interest is the usual one, references and dates rather than legend, and two of the three lineages are on this site in full, the Speedmaster's from the CK2915 to the modern co-axials and the Seamaster 300's from the CK2913 to the Royal Navy issue. Every movement in all three families dates by its serial through the Omega lookup, and the class of 1957, taken together, remains the best single argument for the site's founding premise: the references outlive everything, including the products that failed.
